The Arizona Diamondbacks are World Series Champions!

November 1, 2012: John McDonald hit just .178 in the playoffs and just .167 in the World Series, but he will long be remembered as a World Series hero since his 3-run home run in the 4th inning of Game 7 turned a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 lead that held up as the final score. McDonald of course also hit a grand slam the day before in a game 6 rout. Miguel Montero and Chris Johnson set the table for McDonald with singles preceding his big blast.

Trevor Cahill went 6 innings for the win, his first win of the Series but his 4th of the playoffs. David Hernandez struck out 3 in 2 scoreless innings, and JJ Putz earned the save. Pinch hitter Delmon Young ended the game with a ground out with a runner on 1st.

Aaron Hill earns the World Series MVP. He didn't hit a 3-run homer in Game 7 like McDonald, but he did win game 2 with a walk-off 3-run homer and hit .370 for the Series.

44,000 fans were treated to a fine game at Chase Field as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end. The Arizona Diamondbacks won by the
slimmest of margins, 3 to 2.

Detroit lost it in the 4th inning when Arizona did all their damage when they
came up with 3 runs on 3 hits. The key at-bat was by John McDonald who
excited the crowd when he lofted a three-run bomb. Both teams' bats went to
sleep after the 4th inning with no runs scored after that point.

Trevor Cahill(4-0) went 6 innings allowing 2 runs for the victory. Cahill got
help from J.J. Putz who was credited with his 6th save. Max Scherzer(0-2)
took the loss.

October 31, 2012: Diamondbacks 10 Tigers 5 (World Series tied, 3-3)

The Diamondbacks hammer Anibal Sanchez, and the Detroit bullpen is little relief in a 10-5 win that sets up a game 7 showdown in this year's World Series. Miguel Montero cracked a 2-run homer in the 2nd that gave his team a 3-0 lead. The DBacks ultimately scored 4 runs off Sanchez, and it could have been even worse if not for a first inning triple play turned by the Tigers! Arizona had 3 straight singles to start the game and had already scored a run when the Tigers turned the trick.

Detroit had pulled within 2 runs with 2 in the top of the 4th, but Arizona put it away for good in the 6th when they loaded the bases with a walk and single off Joaquin Benoit and an intentional walk of Chris Johnson by Phil Coke. Coke did that to face John McDonald, who cracked a big fly to score 4 runs and put Arizona up by 6.

Max Scherzer and Patrick Corbin will reprise their game 3 matchup in a game 7 showdown. Scherzer went 9 innings in game 3 and allowed just one earned run, but was out of the game when it was decided by a Wil Nieves solo homer in the 9th.

This will be my first World Series decided in a 7th game since 2004, when the Braves beat the Red Sox. 2004, 2003 and 2001 all went the distance; all three were lost by the Red Sox to the Braves, Astros and Giants, respectively.

WEB GEMS- Bot 1st: Detroit turns a triple play!

John McDonald smacked a grand slam as the Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the
Detroit Tigers by the score of 10 to 5 at Chase Field.

The game started off with Arizona taking the lead in the first plating an
isolated run on 3 hits. Offensively, Arizona was a juggernaut. They scored
in 6 separate innings.

The win went to Patrick Corbin(2-0) who allowed 3 runs in 6 and 2/3 innings.
Anibal Sanchez(0-3) was tagged with the loss. He allowed 8 hits and no walks
in 4 innings.

October 29, 2012: Tigers 5 Diamondbacks 1 (Tigers lead World Series, 3-2)

The Tigers got exactly what they needed out of Justin Verlander in game 5, and now sit one win away from their first World Series win of my SOM era, and their first since 1984 if we go back to real life history.

Verlander went 8 innings, allowing just one run. Walks were again a problem for him with 5, but he was able to scatter the baserunners to keep the runs off the board. He also got some help from his defense, who turned 3 double plays.

Offensively, the Tigers led the solo homer do the talking: Delmon Young in the 2nd, Alex Avila and Omar Infante in the 7th, and Prince Fielder in the 8th. The other run came in the 2nd when Andy Dirks tripled after Young's home run and scored on a ground out.

The series will return to Arizona, where Anibal Sanchez and Patrick Corbin will have a rematch of game 2, which was won on a walk-off 3-run homer from Aaron Hill.

The Detroit Tigers toppled the Arizona Diamondbacks by a 5 to 1 score at
Comerica Park.

Detroit took the lead for good in the 2nd inning scoring 2 runners on 2 hits.
That early run support was enough for Justin Verlander(4-0) and Detroit.
Detroit had 10 hits for the night while Arizona had 5.

Ian Kennedy(0-3) was hit with the loss. He surrendered 6 hits and 2 walks in
6 and 1/3 innings.

October 28, 2012: Tigers 8 Diamondbacks 7 (10) (World Series tied, 2-2)

The Diamondbacks and Tigers need extra innings to settle the score for the 2nd straight day, but this time it's the Tigers who come out on top and tie up the series in the process. The Tigers were down by 2 going into the 8th but scored a run in the 8th, a run in the 9th to tie it, and a run in the 10th to win it. Here's how it went down:

In the 8th, the Tigers got consecutive signles from the first 3 batters in their lineup, scoring a run and leaving runners on 2nd and 3rd for Prince Fielder. Fielder was pitched around and walked, and Brennan Bosch entered as a pinch hitter for Delmon Young, but struck out to end the inning.

In the 9th, an Austin Jackson single following a single and an HBP scored a run. Don Kelly walked to load the bases, but this time it was Miguel Cabrera who missed an opportunity, grounding out to end the inning.

In the 10th, Fielder grounded out to start the inning, but then it was back to back walks for Boesch and Jhonny Peralta. The Dbacks went to their bullpen for Brad Bergesen, but Avisail Garcia singled to load the bases and Andy Dirks singled to score the winning run.

The Diamondbacks better hope they have plenty of hits left in those bats, because Justin Verlander takes the mound for game 5 against Ian Kennedy.

October 25, 2012: Diamondbacks 6 Tigers 5 (World Series tied, 1-1)

It looked like the Tigers were going to go back to Detroit with a 2-0 lead in the World Series, but Aaron Hill had other ideas.

The Tigers were sitting on a 5-2 lead after 6 and just needed to get through the last 3 innings. Back-to-back singles to lead off the 8th put a run on the board for the Diamondbacks, but Tigers closer Jose Valverde just had to get the three outs in the 9th to preserve the win.

Gerardo Parra led off the inning with a triple, which brought the tying run to the plate. Pinch hitter Wil Nieves struck out, but then Adam Eaton walked and now the tying run was on 1st and the go-ahead run was at the plate. Aaron Hill was that go-ahead run, and he dumped one in the seats for a walk-off win and a raucous celebration. It is Valverde's first loss of this postseason, but his 3rd blown save.

October 24, 2012: Tigers 6 Diamondbacks 1 (Tigers lead World Series, 1-0)

It was all Justin Verlander, Miguel Cabrera and the Detroit Tigers, who roll into Arizona and beat the Diamondbacks in Game 1 of the 2012 World Series. Chris Johnson of the DBacks had the only 2 hits of the game for his team, a 2nd inning homer that was the only hit given up by Verlander over 8 innings, and a 9th inning single off Jose Valverde. Verlander walked 5 but struck out 13.

Cabrera got the Tigers on the board first with a 2-run blast in the first, then bookended the game with another 2-run blast in the 9th. Alex Avila added a 2-run blast of his own in the 3rd.

Patrick Corbin will try to even the series up in the game 2 start against Anibal Sanchez of the Tigers.

October 21, 2012: Diamondbacks 9 Phillies 8 (Diamondbacks win NLCS, 4-2)

The Phillies fought valiantly until the end, but the Diamondbacks just had too much fire power in the game and in the series, and now it will be Arizona taking on Detroit in the 2012 World Series.

I decided to give Cliff Lee the start on 3 days rest in the must-win game, and Lee wasn't up to the task. He allowed 3 runs through the first 4 innings, and then gave up 3 hits and 2 walks before being pulled in the 5th. Josh Lindblom got the last 2 outs of the inning but then got into his own troubles in the 6th, when he allowed a run and was charged with a 2nd inherited run after Jake Diekman entered the game.

The Phillies did rally in the 6th and were actually within a run thanks to a 3-run Ryan Howard homer immediately followed by a Carlos Ruiz solo shot. The Phillies entered the 9th down by 3 runs and quickly were down 2 outs, but an error, a Howard single and a Ruiz double put 2 runs in and the tying run on 2nd. Pinch hitter Nate Schierholtz grounded out to end it.

The DBacks got 3 hits each from Aaron Hill, Justin Upton and Miguel Montero, and 2 RBI each from Montero, Chris Johnson and AJ Pollock. Wade Miley wasn't dominant by any means, but his offense earned him the win.

The series MVP is Upton, who led the team with 8 runs scored in the series, hit .375, and had a couple homers and a couple stolen bases.

The Diamondbacks will enjoy 2 days off and no travel, since they have home field thanks to an NL win in the All-Star Game. Ian Kennedy will oppose Justin Verlander in game 1 of the World Series.

46,111 fans watched an exciting game at Chase Field. The Arizona Diamondbacks
topped the Philadelphia Phillies by the slimmest of margins, 9 to 8.

In the 2nd inning Arizona went on top for good plating one baserunner. After
an out was recorded, A.J. Pollock ripped a solo home run. After another out,
Adam Eaton got his turn next, but he was a strikeout victim. Philadelphia
threatened in the 9th but Arizona was able to put down the rally.

The victory went to Wade Miley(2-1) who went 5 and 1/3 innings, allowing 4
runs. J.J. Putz recorded the save, his 4th. Cliff Lee(3-1) was the losing
pitcher. He got hammered, allowing 8 hits and 3 walks in 4 and 1/3 innings.

October 19, 2012: Diamondbacks 10 Phillies 9 (Diamondbacks lead NLCS, 3-2)

The Phillies offense finally shows some sign of life, but unfortunately it's on the same day that the Phillies pitchers give up 10 runs. The Phillies fall one run short and are now need to win the next 2 games in Arizona in order to get to the World Series.

The Diamondbacks had less hits but were more efficient in their scoring, including four runs on one hit when AJ Pollock hit a 4th inning grand slam.

A.J. Pollock collected 4 RBI with one swing of the bat as the Arizona
Diamondbacks bested the Philadelphia Phillies 10 to 9 at Citizens Bank
Park.

Pollock had a big day against Philadelphia. He doubled in the 3rd inning and
emptied the bases with a Grand Slam homerun in the 4th inning. Even though
they scored in 6 different innings, Philadelphia was not able to pull off the
win.

Trevor Cahill(3-0) went 6 and 2/3 innings allowing 7 runs for the victory.
J.J. Putz recorded his 3rd save. Cole Hamels(0-2) ended up with the loss.
He was unable to control the Arizona offense and allowed 8 hits and 3 walks
in 4 and 1/3 innings.

'I just wanted to give my team a chance to win.' said Cahill, 'I got burned on
a couple of pitches. But we won the game, and that's all that matters.'

October 18, 2012: Tigers 5 A's 4 (Tigers win ALCS, 4-1)

A team that had a losing record during the regular season is going to the World Series for the first time ever, as the Detroit Tigers finish off the Oakland A's in 5 games. The game started out catastrophic for the A's and their starter Tommy Milone. Tigers leadoff hitter Austin Jackson reached on an error from A's RF Josh Reddick, then Omar Infante singled and Milone issued walks to Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder, the 2nd pushing across Jackson. Delmon Young then delivered the death blow, a bases-clearing blast that put the Tigers up 5-0 and Milone out of the game. The A's bullpen did their part, and Reddick atoned for his error with a 2-run homer in the 6th and a 2-run single in the 8th, but the A's rally was shut down when Joaquin Benoit got Yoenis Cespedes to ground into a double play to end the 8th. The A's went quietly in the 9th.

The Tigers were the AL Champion in real life as well, getting swept by the Giants in the World Series.

The series MVP is Cabrera, who hit .438 for the series and hit 3 HR with 7 RBI. He also led the team with 5 runs scored.

The extra days off will line up Justin Verlander for a game 1 start in either Arizona or Philadelphia.

The Detroit Tigers and the Oakland Athletics locked up in an exciting one-run
game at O.co Coliseum. The final score was the Detroit Tigers 5, the Oakland
Athletics 4.

Detroit delivered all the runs required in the 1st inning as they scored 5
runs on 2 base hits. That scoring would be all that was needed. Detroit had
only 5 hits for the night.

The win was credited to Doug Fister(3-0) who went 7 innings allowing 4 runs.
Jose Valverde preserved the game for Fister, recording his his 3rd save.
Tommy Milone(0-2) was hit with the loss.

October 18, 2012: Phillies 6 Diamondbacks 2 (NLCS tied, 2-2)

A 2-run Ryan Howard home run in the 6th and a big 4-run 8th turn a 2-0 deficit into a 6-2 win for the Phillies, and more importantly turns a potential 3-1 series hole into a 2-2 tie and essentially a 3-game series. An untimely error from DBacks pitcher Brad Bergesen loaded the bases instead of ending the inning, and pinch hitter Jimmy Rollins made it count with a 3-run double. Jonathan Papelbon continues his scoreless postseason despite allowing a couple singles in the top of the 9th.

Ryan Howard hit one over the fence and had 2 RBI as the Philadelphia Phillies
defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks by the score of 6 to 2 at Citizens Bank
Park.

Philadelphia had the winning rally in the 8th inning when they came up with 4
runs on 2 hits. The highlight belonged to Jimmy Rollins who brought the
crowd to their feet when he doubled with all three baserunners touching home.
Philadelphia banged out 10 hits on the night.

The winning pitcher was Jeremy Horst(1-0) who allowed no runs in 1 inning.
Mike Zagurski(0-1) was hit with the loss in relief. He pitched 1 inning and
surrendered 1 hit and 1 walk.

October 17, 2012: Tigers 3 A's 2 (TIgers lead ALCS, 3-1)

The 77-win Tigers are one win away from the World Series after a 3-2 win over the A's in Game 4 of the ALCS. Max Scherzer and Jarrod Parker were locked in a scoreless duel until the 7th, when Alex Avila put 2 on the board for the Tigers with a home run with Andy Dirks on base following a single. The A's got one back in the bottom of the inning on a Brandon Moss homer, then tied it up in the bottom of the 8th when Seth Smith led off with a double and scored on Cliff Pennington's single. The A's missed an opportunity when Pennington stole 2nd and 3rd, but then was thrown out at the plate on a fielder's choice ground out. That missed opportunity proved especially disappointing when the Tigers got a 2-out triple in the 9th from Jhonny Peralta, followed by a single from Avila. Jose Valverde had blown the save in the bottom of the 8th, but ended up with the win and got the needed 3 outs in the bottom of the 9th.

The A's will send embattled starter Tommy Milone to the mound in game 5 hoping he turns his luck around and extends the series. The Tigers will counter with Doug Fister.

October 17, 2012: Phillies 2 Diamondbacks 0 (Diamondbacks lead NLCS, 2-1)

Four Phillies pitchers combine on the shutout and the Phillies get their first win of the series in the first game in Citizens Bank Park. The Phils got a run in the 4th on a John Mayberry home run, and another in the 6th when Ryan Howard doubled following a Chase Utley single. The Phillies offense still needs to break out if they're going to have a chance in this series. They had just 5 hits in this game and have scored just 5 runs so far in the series.
