May 11, 2012: Nationals 3 Reds 1

The Nationals continue their midwest tour with a series-opening win in Cinicinnati. Ian Desmond led the charge with a 3 for 4 day, scoring the Nats' first run in the 1st following a double and adding an insurance run with a solo homer in the 9th. Adam Laroche also had 3 hits, and scored the go-ahead run in the 8th off a single followed by a Rick Ankiel double.

Gio Gonzalez earns his 3rd win of the year thanks to that 8th inning run. Tyler Clippard earns the save despite being tired from 4 innings of work in the Nats last 2 games.

lined a base-hit knocking in a run in the 5th inning and cracked a two-run
shot in the 7th inning. Boston out-hit Cleveland for the game, 13 hits to 5.

Clay Buchholz(6-0) went 7 innings allowing 2 runs for the victory. Ubaldo
Jimenez(2-5) ended up with the loss. He pitched 2/3 of an inning allowing 2
hits and 3 walks.

'They made a couple of mistakes and I took full advantage,' Middlebrooks said

May 10, 2012: Indians 5 Red Sox 4 (10)

The Indians score the eventual winning run in the top of the 10th when Shin-Soo Choo tried to steal 3rd and Sox cather Kelly Shoppach threw the ball into the outfield. The Sox had come back to tie it at 4 in the 7th thanks to a 2-run homer from Dustin Pedroia and a solo shot from Adrian Gonzalez.

Old friend Derek Lowe got the start for the Indians, pitched well through the first 4 innings, got pulled at the first sign of trouble in the 5th, and did not factor in the decision.

The Cleveland Indians and the Boston Red Sox locked up in an exciting one-run
game at Fenway Park. The final score was the Cleveland Indians 5, the Boston
Red Sox 4 in 10 innings.

The game was deadlocked at 4 after nine full innings. Cleveland won the game
in the 10th inning. Shin-Soo Choo smacked a single. After another out,
Shelley Duncan was next to the plate, but was promptly struck out. Jack
Hannahan then drew a walk. Choo stole third and scored when the ball ended
up in the outfield. Overall Cleveland out-hit Boston 11 to 8.

The victory went to Dan Wheeler(1-0) who went 2 innings, allowing no runs.
Wheeler got relief help from Chris Perez who gained credit for his 6th save.
Rich Hill(0-1) was given the loss in relief. He was pinned with the loss
despite not allowing an earned run in his 1 inning of work.

May 9, 2012: Nationals 8 Pirates 5 (12)

Jesus Flores didn't get into this one until the 12th, but he made sure to be noticed with a 3-run pinch hit blast that gives the Nats the win. All 3 runs are unearned because there were 2 on and 2 out, and the first runner of the inning reached base on an error. If not for the error, there would have been 3 outs before Flores had a chance to pinch hit for pitcher Henry Rodriguez. Tom Gorzelanny pitches the bottom of the 12th with the 3-run lead, and earns the save.

May 6, 2012: Nationals 8 Phillies 4

Danny Espinosa's 1-out double in the 7th was the tipping point in this game. It was just the 4th hit off Cole Hamels, but it put runners on 2nd and 3rd and brought Antonio Bastardo out of the bullpen. Bastardo struck out Rick Ankiel, but a Wilson Ramos single scored 2 runners, a pinch hit home run from Xavier Nady tied the game, and the Nats added 4 more runs in the 8th on a Bryce Harper solo homer and a 3-run shot from Espinosa.

Ian Desmond is the hero of the day for the Nationals, as he hits a walk off home run to lead off the bottom of the 9th, scoring the game's only run. It's a shame that Gio Gonzalez can't get a win with his 7 shutout innings and 13 K's.

May 5, 2012: Red Sox 2 Orioles 1

No one told the Strat-o-matic version of the 2012 Red Sox that they're supposed to be terrible. Well, I suppose the cards will bear that out eventually, but for now they win another one, maintaining the best record in the majors.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia was responsible for both Sox runs with solo homers in the 5th and 7th. Robert Andino of the O's got their lone run with a 6th inning solo shot. Aaron Cook wins his first start for the Sox, allowing 3 hits over 5 1/3. Alfredo Aceves seems to be making his case for the closer's job with a save in 2 straight games.

May 4, 2012: Nationals 3 Phillies 2 (13)

After 2 slugfest wins over the Diamondbacks, the Nationals welcome the Phillies to town and have a much tighter competition that thankfully still ends in a win. Nationals starter Stephen Strasburg had trouble keeping the Phillies off the basepaths and gae up 8 hits and 2 runs over just 5 innings. The Nats bullpen fared much better, pitching 8 innings and allowing just 2 hits, including 3 hitless innings for both Craig Stammen and Tyler Clippard.

The Nats first got on the board in the fourth on a Jayson Werth solo homer, then tied it in the 6th on doubles from Bryce Harper and Chad Tracy. Finally in the 13th, Werth led off with a double, and ultimately scored on a Jesus Flores single following 2 outs and an intentional walk of Adam Laroche.

Credit also goes to Flores for throwing out Juan Pierre while stealing third in the top of the 10th. If not for the CS, Pierre would have scored on Placido Polanco's subsequent single.

Jon Lester mowed down 10 Baltimore batters at Fenway Park where the Boston Red
Sox beat the Baltimore Orioles 3 to 2.

Lester(2-1) looked very much in control throughout the night. He didn't give
up much, just 4 hits and 1 walk in 8 innings. Boston had 7 hits for the game
and Baltimore had 4.

Lester got help from Alfredo Aceves who was credited with his 2nd save. Matt
Lindstrom(0-1) was the loser in relief. When asked about his strikeout total
for the game, Lester offered, 'The fan's really got into it. It is fun to
see them tally up the strikeout totals up there in the stands. Fortunately,
I kept them busy tonight - of course, it would be all for naught without the
'W'.'
