April 16, 2012: Nationals 10 Astros 6

The Nationals slug their way to a big win over the Astros. Nats starter Stephen Strasburg went just 5 innings, but it's enough for a win as he left with a 6-3 lead. Strasburg had a bad inning with 2 singles, 3 walks and a wild pitch that led to 3 runs charged against him.

The bats were lively for the Nats, led once again by Wilson Ramos who was 3 for 5 and Roger Bernadina who was 2 for 4 with his 5th home run of the season. Bernadina hit just 5 homers all season in real life in 2012, yet somehow has 5 after just 11 games! When 7 different hitters have 2 hits or more, you're probably going to win the game.

Steve Lombardozzi had 2 base hits and 3 RBI at Nationals Park as the
Washington Nationals beat the Houston Astros by the count of 10 to
6.

Houston was unable to climb back into it after Washington went ahead for good
in the bottom of the 5th inning when they tallied 3 runs on 2 hits. The key
offensive moment was provided by Lombardozzi who excited the crowd when he
banged out a single bringing home two baserunners. For the game Washington
out-hit Houston 15 to 7.

The victory went to Stephen Strasburg(2-0) who went 5 innings, allowing 3
runs. Kyle Weiland(1-1) was hit with the loss. He was not very effective,
surrendering 6 runs in 4 and 1/3 innings.

James Shields mowed down 10 Boston batters and Ben Zobrist went deep and had 2
RBI at Fenway Park where the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Boston Red Sox by the
score of 9 to 3.

The Boston fans didn't appreciate the big day Zobrist had. He tripled in the
2nd inning, doubled in the 6th inning and lifted one out of the park for a
two run home run in the 7th inning. Tampa Bay simply wore out the Boston
pitching staff, scoring in 6 different innings.

Shields(2-1) picked up the victory, allowing 3 runs in 7 and 2/3 innings.
Fernando Rodney was credited with his 3rd save. Justin Thomas(0-1) took the
loss in relief.

Bobby Valentine was impressed with Shields and his 10 strikeouts. 'It's tough
to generate runs if you can't make contact with the ball.'

April 15, 2012: Nationals 4 Reds 3

Roger Bernadina wasn't part of the Nats starting lineup today, but he is a big part of their win. Bernadina entered in the bottom of the 5th as a pinch hitter for starting pitcher Ross Detwiler with the Nats down 3-1. He immediately cut the deficit in half with a solo homer, and stayed in the game to play left. The game was tied by his next turn at bat thanks to a Jayson Werth double and a Rick Ankiel single, and Bernadina laid down a squeeze play that scored the go-ahead run from third. The 4-3 score would hold up as the final. Werth also deserves mention for his 3 for 4 day with 2 doubles.

39,023 fans were treated to a fine game at Nationals Park as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end. The Washington Nationals won by the
slimmest of margins, 4 to 3.

Washington scored 2 runs in the decisive bottom of the 6th inning with the
help of 3 hits. They ended up being the winning runs. Cincinnati tried
unsuccessfully to come back in the 9th.

Sean Burnett(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 1 inning and allowing
no runs. Burnett got relief help from Henry Rodriguez who gained credit for
his 2nd save. Sam Lecure(0-1) was given the loss in relief.

April 15, 2012: Red Sox 8 Rays 7 (13)

The Red Sox stage a notable comeback to tie it after 9, then finally get the win in the 13th on back-to-back doubles from Darnell McDonald and Jarrod Saltalamacchia.

The early stages of the game were all Rays. Starter Matt Moore was carrying a no-hitter into the 6th inning, and the Rays put up 5 runs on 3 homers off Sox starter Felix Doubront. The Sox were down 7-0 at the 7th inning stretch, but finally got on the board in the bottom of the 7th and then scored 6 runs on 6 straight hits to start the 8th, capped by a game-tying 3-run home run from Cody Ross.

Alfredo Aceves earned the win for the Sox, and it was well-deserved with his 4 innings of hitless relief. Sox pitchers struck out 20 Rays, including Evan Longoria 5 times!

Washington out-hit Cincinnati 10 to 5.

The victory went to Edwin Jackson(1-1) who went 6 innings, allowing 2 runs.
Homer Bailey(0-2) was the loser. He allowed 6 hits and no walks in 2/3 of an

April 14, 2012: Red Sox 2 Rays 1

Rays starter Jeremy Hellickson gave up just 2 hits in this one - both were home runs by Kevin Youkilis, including one in the bottom of the 9th that gave the Sox the win. Clay Buchholz was almost as sharp, giving up just 1 run and 4 hits over 8+ innings, but Franklin Morales gets the win after relieving Buchholz.

Kevin Youkilis cracked 2 homeruns at Fenway Park as the Boston Red Sox won a
thriller over the Tampa Bay Rays in, 2 to 1.

Boston scored the deciding run in the 9th inning. After an out was recorded,
Youkilis lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' giving Boston the win much to the
delight of the home town crowd. Boston had only 2 hits for the afternoon.

Franklin Morales(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 1 inning and
allowing no runs. Jeremy Hellickson(1-1) was tagged with the loss. He
allowed 2 runs and 2 hits in 8 and 1/3 innings.

April 13, 2012: Reds 3 Nationals 2

Roger Bernadina hits 2 homers from the leadoff position, but otherwise the Nats bats are dormant against the Reds. Former National Willie Harris knocked in the eventual winning run with a sac fly in the 6th, but Joey Votto was the biggest pain for Nats starter Jordan Zimmermann. Votto knocked in a run with a single in the 3rd, and hit a solo homer in the 5th.

Zimmermann takes the loss despite a "quality start". The Nats offense has cooled off a bit since the hot start and runs are becoming harder to come by. That's a similar pattern to the 2011 Nats, who didn't let it stop them from winning the World Series.

WEB GEMS- Bot 5th: Ryan Ludwick robbed Wilson Ramos of a Homerun!

38,631 fans watched an exciting game at Nationals Park. The Cincinnati Reds
topped the Washington Nationals by the slimmest of margins, 3 to
2.

Cincinnati tallied 1 run in the top of the 6th inning. Washington made it
exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across.

The win was credited to Bronson Arroyo(2-0) who went 7 innings allowing 2
runs. Jose Arredondo preserved the game for Arroyo, recording his his 1st
save. The losing pitcher was Jordan Zimmermann(1-1).

Davey Johnson was in a contemplative mood after the tough loss, 'It is really
hard to lose this kind of a game. It may seem weird to some, but it is
easier to take the occasional blow-out loss. It is the ones that just barely
get away that hurt so much - like this one!'

WEB GEMS- Top 1st: Kelly Shoppach blocked the plate, saving a run!

Shortstop Mike Aviles slammed a homerun and had 2 RBI as the Boston Red Sox
topped the Tampa Bay Rays by a score of 10 to 3 at Fenway Park.

Tampa Bay was unable to recover after Boston went ahead in the 6th inning with
2 runs on 3 hits. Aviles kicked off the action when he ripped a base-knock.
Two outs later Dustin Pedroia stepped in and he slapped a single. Adrian
Gonzalez then reached on an error. David Price then let one get away for a
wild pitch. Kevin Youkilis came to the plate and delivered a base-hit.
Boston finished with 16 hits while Tampa Bay ended up with 8.

The win went to Scott Atchison(1-1) who allowed no runs in 1 and 1/3 innings.
Price(0-1) was the losing pitcher. He gave up 7 runs in 6 and 2/3 innings
and saw his ERA jump from 5.40 to 6.08.

April 12, 2012: Nationals 4 Reds 2

The Nationals win their home opener behind 7 strong innings from Gio Gonzalez. The Nats got a solo homer from Adam Laroche in the 3rd, then a 2-run bomb in the 8th from Wilson Ramos. The Ramos HR proves critical because otherwise, the Reds would have tied the game in the 9th with a Scott Rolen solo homer off Brad Lidge. Instead, Lidge earns his first save in a Nats uniform.

April 11, 2012: Mets 4 Nationals 3

The Mets win by a run in a game that saw both teams rally in the 8th.

The Mets had a 3-1 lead off two home runs, a 2nd inning 2-run blast from Jason Bay and a 4th inning solo shot from Ronny Cedeno. The Nats lone run came on an Ian Desmond solo homer in the 3rd. In the 8th, Danny Espinosa doubled and Jayson Werth walked, then pinch hitter Roger Bernadina hit a pinch-hit, hit and run, 2 out double to score both runners and tie the game.

The Mets also got a double and a walk in the bottom of the inning, and with 2 out Jason Bay walked to load the bases. I went to Sean Burnett out of the bullpen to face lefty Justin Thole, but the Mets countered with righty Scott Hairston, who ripped a single to score the go-ahead run. The Nats got a runner to 2nd in the 9th, but closer Frank Francisco struck out both Desmond and Espinosa to end the game.

April 11, 2012: Red Sox 8 Blue Jays 7 (10)

The Blue Jays out-homered the Sox in this game by a 4-0 margin, but the Sox top the Jays in the much more important runs column.

The Jays started the power show early with 3 runs on 2 homers in the 1st off Jon Lester. The Sox tied it in the top of the 3rd thanks to three singles and two wild pitches from Jays starter Ricky Romero. The Blue Jays re-took the lead in the bottom of the 4th with an Eric Thames two run homer.

allowed 3 hits and 3 walks in 5 innings and surrendered 2 'round-trippers'.

April 10, 2012: Blue Jays 5 Red Sox 3

The Blue Jays ruin what could have been a win in Daniel Bard's first career start with a couple late homers off Alfredo Aceves that turn a 3-2 Red Sox lead into a 5-3 Blue Jays win.

Bard showed some of the troubles that we now know would plague him in his 2012 season, walking 6 and allowing 5 hits over 5 innings. The Sox helped him by turning double plays in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th innings. Bard did allow back-to-back homers to Yunel Escobar and Colby Rasmus, but left with a 3-2 lead thanks to an RBI single from Adrian Gonzalez and a 2-run bomb from Jarrod Saltalamacchia.

Alfredo Aceves entered in the 8th and blew the Sox lead by allowing a solo homer to Edwin Encarnacion, then allowed a 2-run walk-off in the 9th to Kelly Johnson.

The New York (NL) Mets edged the Washington Nationals at Citi Field by the
score of 3 to 2.

Mike Pelfrey(1-0) earned his pay with a solid performance for New York (NL).
He went 6 and 1/3 innings allowing 9 hits and 1 walk. Pelfrey whiffed an
impressive total of 8 Washington batters. Washington had a chance in the 9th
but they came up short.

Frank Francisco was credited with his 1st save. Edwin Jackson(0-1) was charged
with the loss. He surrendered 3 runs and 5 hits in 6 innings.

Davey Johnson was in a contemplative mood after the tough loss, 'It is really
hard to lose this kind of a game. It may seem weird to some, but it is
easier to take the occasional blow-out loss. It is the ones that just barely
get away that hurt so much - like this one!'
