| The Nationals trounce the Cubs by a score of 15-0 thanks to 8 home runs and dominant pitching. Starter Gio Gonzalez makes his Nats debut and pitches 6 shutout innings, allowing just 2 hits. Ryan Mattheus contributes 2 hitless innings, and new face Brad Lidge strikes out 2 batters to close out the game in the 9th. Only one of the Nats 15 runs didn't score on a home run. Adam Laroche led off the 2nd with a solo shot. Ryan Zimmerman and Laroche hit back-to-back solo homers in the 6th to make it 3-0, then the Nats tore it open with back to back 5 run innings in the 7th and 8th. In the 7th, Ian Desmond hit a 2 run homer, Danny Espinosa was hit by a pitch, then Zimmerman hit a 2-run shot. Jayson Werth hit a solo shot two batters later. In the 8th, the Nats loaded the bases and Espinosa was again hit by a pitch, scoring a run. Zimmerman then followed with a bases-clearing blast, giving him 7 RBI for the day. Roger Bernadina got in on the fun with a 2-run homer in the 9th. Espinosa's 2 HBP but no hits for the day gives him an odd line: 4 AB, 2 R, 0 H, 1 RBI. |

Ryan Zimmerman blasted 3 homeruns and Gio Gonzalez delivered 6 solid innings
as the Washington Nationals crushed the Chicago (NL) Cubs 15 to 0.
Zimmerman was a source of great heartache for the Chicago (NL) faithful all
day. He just kept pounding out hits! He smashed a solo-shot out of the park
in the 6th inning, smashed a two-run homer in the 7th inning and caught a
hold of a bad pitch for a Grand Slam homerun in the 8th inning. Washington
provided plenty of action in the 7th inning which saw them plate 5 runs on 4
hits and the 8th inning with 5 runs on 4 hits. Washington had 16 hits for
the afternoon while Chicago (NL) had 2.
Gonzalez(1-0) went 6 innings allowing no runs for the win. Matt Garza(0-1) was
tagged with the loss. He served up 3 homeruns in his 5 and 2/3 innings.
'Zimmerman led the way - we just jumped on his back and let him take us,'
Gonzalez said. 'I'm glad I don't have to face him. I'm glad he's on my team.'
