WEB GEMS- Top 1st: Cincinnati turns a triple play!
Paul Goldschmidt knocked 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI as the Arizona Diamondbacks
beat the Cincinnati Reds in 11 innings by a score of 6 to 5.
Both teams had scored 3 runs after nine full innings. Arizona came out on top
in the 11th inning. After an out was recorded, John McDonald got things
rolling when he blasted a solo shot. Willie Bloomquist was next to the
plate, but was promptly struck out. Adam Eaton then laced a single. Aaron
Hill came up and he smacked a single. Hill took second on the throw. Jason
Kubel stepped into the box and doubled. Goldschmidt got his turn next, but
he was a strikeout victim. Arizona finished with 9 hits in the victory.
The victory went to J.J. Putz(1-0) who went 2 and 1/3 innings, allowing 1 run.
David Hernandez recorded his 1st save. Sean Marshall(0-1) took the loss in
relief. He pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up 3 hits and no walks.

October 9, 2012: Diamondbacks 6 Reds 5, 11 inn (Diamondbacks lead series, 2-1)
It took extra frames, but the Arizona Diamondbacks are just one game away from the NLCS after a 6-5 win. Paul Goldschmidt was all the offense the DBacks needed early, with a solo homer in the 2nd and a 2-run shot in the 4th. Ian Kennedy held on to that 2-run lead until Dionner Navarro hit a 2-run shot in the 8th, which brought JJ Putz out of the bullpen, only to be greeted by a game-tying solo shot from Bradon Phillips. The 3-3 tie held until the 11th, when John McDonald broke it with a home run, then Jason Kubel added a 2-run double after back-to-back singles from Adam Eaton and Aaron Hill. Those extra runs proved important when Ryan Ludwick cracked a 2-run shot in the bottom of the inning to pull the Reds within a run, which would end up being the final margin of victory.
